I’ve been learning a lot in my ventures into national hair magazine submissions. The #1 thing I’ve learned recently is how to digest a big slice of humble pie when your images are rejected. 😉
A few months ago I came up with this patriotic concept for July hair magazine submissions. Unfortunately, we didn’t get accepted for publication. There are a ton of factors magazines use to judge whether they’ll take submissions: Photography, hair, makeup, models, wardrobe styling. While they liked one of the images, we were missing a magical ingredient on the rest and they typically like to publish series rather than individual images.
I won’t lie, I’m SUPER disappointed, especially as I bought a black backdrop, another set of barndoors & gels, and borrowed a 3rd light from a friend, just for this beauty shoot. But life is all about learning and I look forward to getting better. My goal with every beauty shoot is to outdo the last one and I feel like I did that by coming out of my comfort zone and experimenting. Everything you see was done on set with only a little adjustment to the reds in post (for some reason, the red gels came out purple).
Really, I shouldn’t be too hard on myself: I’ve only been shooting for 4 years, doing my own lighting for 2, and I just became educated enough via another photographer friend to discover that my camera (a Canon 50D) has back-focusing issues which explains why I haven’t been able to get my pics as sharp as I’ve wanted to in all this time ha ha. I just can’t wait to see where I’ll be 10 years from now with not only knowledge, but no more money problems keeping me from the gear I need to be a better photographer…I am really looking forward to the day when I can upgrade to a 5D Mark III (or whatever is out by the time I have $4,000 lying around ha ha ;)).
